Green or Glass House Effect

Many vegetables can be grown in a greenhouse all throughout the year but it is a challenge to create heat during the winter and cold atmosphere in the summer to monitor the greenhouse necessary for the vegetables growth. Cold green house, cool green house and warm green house are not different houses but one with different temperatures maintained inside. These temperatures denote the temperatures maintained during the night.

Different types of vegetables

If the area has a short growing season, the cool climate is the right season for warm weather crops like tomatoes and peppers to be grown. A green house extends the short season so that it is possible to relish a red ripe grown tomato. It is also possible to have an earlier crop which may be harvested in June rather than August. Peppers, cucumbers, beans, eggplant, melons, squash and tomatoes are the vegetables which are grown in a green house. Carrots, lettuce and radish are also recommended. While the grower searches the lists for seeds, he must look particularly for varieties that are meant specifically for green house production. For example, Alicante tomato is advised to grow in a cool green house as it can bear cool temperatures while Tornado is suggested fro a green house. The starting dates for the seed change as per the vegetables grown. For tomatoes meant for a warm green house the seeds should be started in early January, transplant in February or early March in grow bags. Alternatively, they may be planted into 5-gallon pots and placed in the south side of the green house. This is the area where they will get most heat during the day. For a winter crop, the seeds must be started by 1st July and transplanted by mid-September. Both cucumber seed and pepper are started at the end of February and transplanted in April for a June harvest.

Pollination of vegetables

Pollination of the vegetables is not done by bees in the green house. So, it becomes a human work. For tomatoes, the bamboo stakes are tapped once in the morning and once at night when the petals of the flowers are curved backwards. There are 3 days to achieve pollination.
